Heat is Half – Solar Thermal Technologies for Industrial Applications and District Heating

Heat amounts to around half of the energy consumed in Europe. By far the largest share of it is currently still generated with fossil fuels. Solar thermal technologies offer a broad range of cost competitive and emission-free solutions, that are key to a secure energy supply. Providing temperatures up to 400°C, solar thermal is an important option for generating heat for industrial processes. From drying over pasteurising and sterilising to distilling or nitrate melting – more than half of the required process heat corresponds to this temperature range. In addition, large-scale solar thermal systems are an essential part of decarbonised heating and cooling networks. In conjunction with seasonal storage systems, they can take over a significant part of the supply.
